A tasty variety which is perfect for growing in raised beds in your garden, the Connover's Colossal variety of Asparagus is a popular choice with 'grow your own' gardeners; the spears are large and bright green in colour, with pointed purple tips on the end of each stalk.
In order to grow effectively, the asparagus crowns need a sunny but sheltered location in the garden, and should not be harvested from for at least two growing seasons to allow the plants to establish themselves. Once harvesting is possible, this variety is high yielding and can be used in many late summer dishes.
Key Information:
Produces tasty green spears with pointed purple tips
A favourite amongst grow your own gardeners
Suitable for growing in raised beds and allotments
Advice & Tips:
Plant in a raised bed using fertile, well-drained soil, applying a general fertiliser before planting commences.
Crowns should be planted 12cm deep, and approximately 30cm apart.
During the first season of growth, allow the plant to become fully established by not cutting any spears. Cutting only a few during the second season will be beneficial to the plant's growth.
Cease cutting at the end of June to allow the plants to build up their strength again, before cutting back to the ground in the autumn.
